Keep Public Name? |
|
|
We are going to replace a win-nt4 box running Exch 5.5 with a Win2003 box
running Exch2003. We purchased a new server with the software loaded and
will be making the change during the holidays.
We currently use an outside service for virus and spam filtering. Our MX
record for our xyz.com points to them. And then there is an A record for
abc.xyz.com that points to our public IP of the Exchange Server. Our
outside service is told to forward the mail to abc.xyz.com on Port nnnn.
My questions is, will the new server have the same Server/Site names
(abc.xyz.com) after the migration, or will I have to set up new names (and a
new A record). If so, I can set up the new A record ahead of time?
Thanks...

Our service is a little different...they don't want the Server's IP address,
they want the servers name. And that name has to be found in the A record.
There is an MX record for xyz.com that points to the service...
So I need to know if my name is going to change...I know the IP address will
stay the same.

I think I have a similar setup within my company. We point an A record at
the Virus/Spam cleaner, which in turn delivers the mail to the IP address
we
have given them.
If the new box is set up in the same way as the old box, then mail will
get
automatically delivered to the new box when it replaces the old.

Len,
Your public IP address remains the same as you stated. Your external
DNS records needs to remain unchanged, so that the existing abc.xyz.com
still points to the same public IP address. If you do this, to the
internet your new server will still have the same DNS name/IP as the
olde one, and your spam filtering company will be able to forward you
email.
As a side-note, why don't you run your own anti-spam / anti-virus by
installing software on the new Exchange server...? It will be most
likely more efficient and flexible than having a 3rd party do it for
you.

Re: Keep Public Name? |

Thanks for the info...so if I seem to understand correctly, it doesn't
matter what the name of the e-mail server is internally? The forwarding
service will connect to whatever server answers the call at that IP address
and port?
As for the spam and anti-virus, yes we will add our own once we upgrade.
But our ISP doesn't allow running e-mail servers and blocks port 25. So
this service can get e-mail to us on another port. The spam and virus
checking was just a bonus...
