We have an excahnge 2003 server here and we have OWA setup so people can
check their mail from outside of the office. I get a lot of calls though from
people that, no matter how many times I tell them, forget to type the domain\
before their username. I don't want to mess up those users who know how to
login correctly so ideally I would like a user to be able to login both ways.
They should be able to login with domain\username or username. Can anyone
point me in the right direction on how this is done? I have seen this setup
at another company so I know it can be done but im not sure how to do it.

Is the logon box a website, or a popup box? If it is a popup box, you
aren't using Forms-based authentication. If the logon prompt is an actual
web page with pretty graphics and everything :-) then it's FBA.

If you are using FBA:
http://www.msexchange.org/tutorials/OWA2003Forms-based-Authentication-default-domain.html

If you aren't using FBA, then in ESM, go under the server, protocols, http,
exchange virtual server, Exchange properties, Access tab, authentication
button. Make sure that the default domain is the netbios name of the domain
where the user accounts reside, and also I believe you have to turn off
Integrated authentication. Don't make the changes in IIS Manager because
Exchange will overwrite them every 15 minutes with the DS2MB process.

Im not sure this was setup by someone else and I don't have much experience
with exchange. I know we use SSL so we go to the website
https://server.domain.com then there is a box for domain\username and
password we type in the info and it logs in.

Teach your users to login to their email using their email address (this
works assuming you've got their UPN set to their primary email address). I
find this is the most obvious and easy to remember. In fact, we use the UPN
for all logins and haven't even told people about the domain\username login.
Sure, it could be a bit more typing but their are benefits to it.

Thanks for the responses guys and this does help me in figuring out how to
change it. What I really want to do though is allow the users to login using
both methods. This way the users that are currently using domain\username
wont have to change the way they login. I have noticed this being the case at
antoher business but im not sure how to go about doing this. Any ideas?
