I am setting up SBS 2003 in a company with only 8 clients and eventually I
want to use the Exchange Server for mail. I have set up the relevant pop3
accounts to the clients using Outlook 2003 so they can access their e-mails
directly. On each Client m/c (all use Windows XP Pro), in Outlook -
'Tools'-'E-mail Accounts' there is listed, the Exchange Server a/c and the
POP3 a/c. The 'Exchange Server' a/c is always set to default. I can change
the default to POP3 and all is well. Everything works. BUT the next time the
user logs on, the default has gone back to 'Exchange Server' again and I get
errors saying 'mail couldn't be delivered' or something. How can I make the
POP3 account the default permanently?

Any ideas? Thanks.

Why would you want to use POP3 in the local office? If you have SBS 2003 I
can't really see why you would. Use Exchange and if you have remote workers
then either OWA or Outlook RPC Over HTTP, depending on what you require.

If you do have a remote worker that dials up so speed is an issue then you
might want POP3 for them, but if you do then use Secure POP3 (port 995 -
setup with certificate) as username / password is sent clear text.

Rob,
Thank you for replying. My problem stems mainly from the fact that this is
my first experience of SBS 2003. I just wanted to get the email system
working before the workforce get back from the holiday break which is the 4th
Jan 05.

I understand exchange wants an 'MX Record'? from the host and without it,
receiving mail doesn't work, but does work with POP3. That's why I wanted the
POP3 to stay set to default untill I can set up an MX Record.

Anyway, I have been playing a bit more and now I have set Exchange to send
mail through the DNS host server which seems to work. The send and receive
hosts are different companies. So, I am sending mail through one account but
receiving it through the POP3 system on another account.

Messy I know but this is what I have inherited.
