I just set up Small Business Server 2003 with Exchange sp1.
The SBS server is in the domain domainname.local.

It receives email from an MX record that points to
domainname.NET

Users send and receive great everywhere except
domainname.COM
When I send email to the sister name domainname.com from
inside the domain it bounces back with ndr 5.1.1 from our
local exchange machine

I can ping domainname.com which is a secondary POP account
you host tracert to domainname.com works fine too

Anyone outside this domain can send/receive without any
problems to either .net or .com domains without problems.

If you are an exchange user inside the domainname.net you
cannot send to domainname.com. I believe Exchange takes
the file and tries to route it locally, when it needs to
be forced to go to the internet to the unix pop server and
deliver the mail there.

Are you sure you don't have domainname.net in your recipient policy/policies
on this server?
