I'm getting ready to setup an 2 node A/P Exchange cluster (we've got about
600 users) and I wanted to see how many people were actually using a
seperate group for the Distributed Transaction Coordinator? Doing so
requires it's own Disk, IP address and Network name. From what I've read
the MSDTC Resource is only needed for the Exchange install. Is this correct
or are there any benifits to not including it in the Quroum Group?
Microsoft says they "don't recomend it", but that it's "OK" if you've
already got it setup that way (Q168948). Should I really use another disk
to setup DTC in it's own group? Is there a compeling reason to use an
seperate SMTP drive as well?

from what I've read so far ideally you would have:
1GB Quroum drive
1GB DTC drive
300GB+ DataBase drive
50 GB Transaction logs
10 GB SMTP Queue drive

Thanks for any feedback,

SM

For Exchange, I would always put in it with the Quorum.

Cheers,

No, you don't need a dedicated resource group for the DTC in an Exchange
cluster. Microsoft's best practice recommendation for Exchange clusters is
to create the DTC resource in the cluster resource group, and clear the
'Affect the group' checkbox for the DTC resource. We will be updating all
of our content to reflect this, as we have recently settled on this as a
best practice.

As an aside, you generally need a separate resource group for the DTC
resource when you have an application that makes use of the DTC during
normal operations. This is especially important of usage of the DTC
resource is I/O intensive. Exchange 2000 and Exchange 2003 only use the DTC
resource during Setup and Service Pack Setup (and therefore less than 1% of
the time). Exchange's use of the DTC resource is by no means I/O intensive
(in fact, we're just using it to registry a single DLL file).

Hope this helps.

To found out more about this...I would recommend you to read Even Dodds article about this. It was published today and here's the
