Can i run only a single exchange server?

    Hi all,

We are thinking of depoly Exchange 2003 server on our
network, however, in all the documentation. They all
referring to front-end and back-end server structure if i
want run mobile device and HTTP outlook service on the
server. Unfortunately, we can only afford only one
exchange 2003 server. I am wondering can i run only a
single exchange 2003 server with mobile device, HTTP
outlook and perhap with RDP over http?

    Thanks in advance!

It is possible but not recommended simply because of the inherant security
issues with opening up your firewall to allow direct access to your LAN.

Depending upon the size of your organization you may want to look at
Microsoft's small business server. It's a lot less expensive when looking
at the overall picture, but has some limitations.

A single Exchange environment is possible, but you better be pretty good in
securing that box and your firewall folks better be pretty good in opening
    only the proper ports.

Not that I am proud of it, but I ran an Exchange Server (5.5 Standard) on a
NT4 Server desktop before for a small company. The software was more
expensive than the desktop. That was before they took e-mail seriously. We
always had an anti-virus and SPAM scanner (once these products came into the
mainstream) between the Exchange server and the internet.

What you might want to explore is talking to your firewall folks regarding
setting up a VPN solution, whether it be an installable (Cisco VPN client)
or a VPN over SSL solution. That would secure your Exchange server a touch
more. You may also want to research an AV solution to put between your
    Exchange server and the net.
