SMTP communication problem

Hello All,
We have done the upgrade from exch 5.5 to exch 2000 then to exchange
2003 this weekend and i have been having some of our cleints getting
the following error message when sending to us now. any help would be
greatly appreciated. It is intermitent, some are able to get through to
us and some cant.

The following recipient(s) could not be reached:
user (E-mail) on 1/18/2005 7:37 AM
There was a SMTP communication problem with the recipient's email
server. Please contact your system administrator
exchange.xxxxxx.xxx #5.5.0 smtp;500 Syntax error, command
unrecognized>"
